“Test Drive” is a fun, jammy song about being curious about someone ;)

Test Drive

The writing process…

I wanted this song to have a laid back, jamming-around-the-campfire kind of vibe, so I knew it had to be bouncy and a little bit repetitive.  The predictable nature of the structure of the song makes it fun and easy to dance to, without taking itself too seriously.

I laid down a quick loop of the chords on guitar and quickly began adding little side layers (little licks here and there that are panned far to the left and right).  I very much wanted this song to feel like a bunch of musicians just hanging out jamming along to a song they had never played before.

After the loop and the “campfire” feeling was established, the lyrics came very easily to me.  I honestly just.. sang the whole intro and chorus.  The verse took me a little longer to write, because I wanted it to have a singing-rap feel to it.  I deliberately chose to use automobile metaphors to dance around the subject of sexual curiosity and fantasy, keeping the song light and fun.

Musically, I had to call in the heavyweights for this track because I wanted it to BOUNCE.  The bass is performed by my dear friend Zak Ferrell.  I told Zak to play whatever the heck he wanted to on this one, and not think too much.  The song is repetitive and leaves room for a lot of creativity within the groove.  I love the little runs that Zak brings to this song while still keeping it bouncy and jammy.

The drums are performed by Logan Damery and he’s a true professional.  I met Logan when he was the drummer for Barcerado and we did a show together at Petra’s in Charlotte.  He’s a drummer that is truly skilled in several different genres of music, so I knew he’d be able to find the vibe of “Test Drive” very easily.
