“A Day Like This” had a very long and extensive writing process because I wrote it over the course of several days.  In a weird way, the sections of the song are their own song that blend perfectly together, just like the different moments that comprise a day.

I wanted the beginning of the song to be soft and soothing.  Musically, I wanted it to feel like that moment when the sun first comes through your blinds and wakes you in the morning.  It’s calming, but also powerful enough to wake you up and get you out of bed.

There is a pause.  A deep breath.  

Then your feet hit the pavement and you go out into the bustling world to pursue your goals and intentions.  This is when the drums and the guitar come in to bring a steady pace and sense of determination to the song.  Here, the saxophone represents the addition of our voice, our song, to this crazy world that we are thrust into every single day.  We are all surrounded by strangers passing us on the street, driving by us in their cars, flying overhead: each with their own mission, their own goals and intentions.  Sometimes they collide with us and sometimes we are all headed in the same direction.  The workday is very much organized chaos.  I wanted the middle of “A Day Like This” to embody all of this action.

As the day fades on, the soft, faint guitar melody brings us back to a place that feels like home.  That same peace of the light hitting the blinds.  It is the same light, but it is different this time…the sunrise becomes the sunset and we are reminded of home, but it is not the same as it was this morning.  But there is the same overwhelming sense of peace that overcomes us.  And the song ends.  A day like this finally ends… 

Maybe this is all just madness. But maybe, just maybe you can feel all of these things when you listen to this song.  I hope you enjoy it.
